1/ What’s the story behind your practice? Do you have an art background?
I draw my inspiration from a multitude of influences; from folk art, to nature, from the macabre and to the Gothic. I have always busied myself sketching and experimenting in all manner of media but lately shadow cuts have become an obsession.

2/ What drew you to shadow cuts?
My love of traditional fairy-tale silhouettes. My mum gave me a silhouette-cut of little red riding hood which is exquisitely intricate and beautiful, but despite this has dark and rather unsettling undertones. I tried to capture this in my own work but I use white paper and shadow mounting to create a softer lace-like quality.

3/ What does each piece involve?
It involves hours of deliberating, sketching, composing, cutting and shadow-mounting! A lot of it is experimenting with an idea to see how to present it best as a shadow cut.

4/ What inspired you to combine the decorative with the subverted?
I like the idea of being drawn in by the intricate detail and then being surprised by the dark content. Maybe I am a disturbed character but I also find it humorous!

5/ What are the top 5 things you are into at the moment?
Climbing, Kitty, Daisy and Louis, Fiona Banner’s aeroplanes, paper-cutting and toast.
