The arrival of Cereal magazine in store met with smiles from us and many of y’all. Minimalist design, interesting articles on undiscovered topics and sumptuous photography reveals itself in a quarterly journal that you’ll want to go back to. Rosa Park, Cereal’s charming editor met with us to answer some questions on her new venture with designer Rich Stapleton.

// Hi Rosa and Rich! Congratulations on your new magazine. We were immediately impressed with the writing in Cereal because it feels more like an enquiry or investigation into a topic, but how do you manage to make the articles interesting whilst remaining educational?

We love discovering fun facts and learning about the history behind various edible topics and travel destinations, which is why the bulk of the writing style in Cereal is on the investigative side of things. We try to keep things interesting and entertaining – even when dealing with rather heavy information – by pairing the copy with striking imagery. And we also endeavour to keep our voice as accessible as possible, so the features never feel too dry or intense. Changing the pace of features help too.

// Countries and cuisine can become quite trendy with all eyes on Peruvian cuisine last year – can you tell us about how you keep your stories both relevant and timeless?

It’s inevitable that we may cover something that people deem “trendy”; after all, what surrounds us the most are the things that are currently dubbed to be on trend by retailers. So our policy is to include things that simply pique our interest and curiosity – no matter time or place. Let’s take Nordic cuisine for example. Yes, it was considered to be very trendy last year, but this doesn’t mean we’ll lose interest in an entire nation’s cuisine the year after, or ten years after. Such topics are, to us, timeless.

// You have both lived in a few countries, has that informed your view?

Definitely. We both come to the table with varied cultural backgrounds. So we have quite fierce opinions on certain places that we’ve lived in! We think once you’re the product of a multicultural upbringing, travel can become engrained into who you are and how you operate.

// What’s been your most memorable food experience?

Rich: Eating perilla leaves seasoned with red chilli pepper wrapped around steamed rice – made me realise how much I love all types of Korean food! | Rosa: watching Rich eat a fish eye ball after I told him everyone in Korea does it – haha!

// What are your top three breakfast cereals?

Rich: Alpen, Shreddies and Dorset Cereals’ granolas. Yes, I’m the healthy one. | Rosa: Corn Pops (the American version), Krave (filled with chocolate!), and frosted flakes.

// Is there anything you can hint at will be in the next issue? (no pressure!)

There will be three chapters on travel and one on food – so we’ve reduced the number of chapters and increased the travel influence! That’s all we can say for now, Volume 2 launches on 19th March!
