It amused me no end to read that photographer David Sims wanted to capture the ‘brilliance of the Cornish landscape’ but instead, due to the weather, shot a stormy, androgynous ode to the darker clouds above. Why is that amusing? Because as any Cornish person knows – or indeed any holidaymaker – our county can be the most beautiful peninsula around but for the weather. In fact, I was once told that Falmouth has the greatest rainfall in the UK. No wonder it’s full of students and pensioners and their associated bars and social clubs. But aside from puddle-dodging others have found the home of pasties, Warren’s Bakery and Clotted cream a place of solace and inspiration: Barbara Hepworth being the most well known.
As it goes, several fashion photographers have followed in Hepworth’s footsteps. A favourite shoot of mine is by Juergen Teller with his then stylist wife Venetia Scott on wardrobe duty, crazy to think this was shot for Vogue Italia twelve years ago.
And V magazine’s also taking on the Kernow love.
