Just In

Cocktail Hour

We’re one night away from New Year’s Eve, which means there will be a lot of you out there getting your drinks cabinet in order and your attire at the ready. As if by magic, we’ve just had a drop of our two favourite cocktail books. For the gal who likes to party there’s Amy Sacco’s Cocktails (£12.95). A nightclub entrepreneur, Sacco opened Lot 61 in 1997, followed by the frighteningly popular Bungalow 8 known not just for the celebrities that frequent it, but also the mix of high and low be it incomes or behaviour – always the sign of a good night, surely! To create your very own Studio 54 this winter we recommend the Snowfall Martini, a combination of vanilla vodka, cream, simple syrup and vanilla bean. The regime can wait.

Meanwhile for those who know their thang Vintage Cocktails is a beautiful book that is both wonderfully photographed (seriously, check out the tableware) and practical. How you say? Well, it’s only bloody ring-bound ready for reference in a cluttered kitchen or nestling on a stand next to your drinks trolley. The White Russian is a favourite because the Christmas Holidays are the only time you can look like the Dude in The Big Lebowski without judgment.

Found’s Top Cocktail Bars

1/ Mo’s – Cnr Wolfe/Federal Street, Auckland

This is where Nik was introduced to an Old Fashioned so good that he has only attempted to replicate it at home. The bar can barely fit 15 people and the barman manages the place in an old school manner. If you’re there, do it!

2/ Loungelover – No. 1 Whitby Street, London

The interior and customer care sells it frankly. A crystal palm tree should be wrong perhaps, but it’s not, it’s the height of glamour and decadence mainly because you can drink a Rock Candy cocktail beneath it. Yes, this cocktail features Citron vodka, lychee liqueur, cranberry & apple juice, ginger and yes, a marshmallow to finish. Dr Strangelove comes recommended too.

3/ Seven Grand – 515 West 7th Street, 2nd Floor, Downtown L.A.

Like an old games room, this is how I imagine the RAC club in London may look, all quilted leather Club chairs, a pool table, stag’s heads, plaid wallpaper and low lighting. You can almost smell the cigars.

4/ Sub 13 – 4 Edgar Buildings, Bath

Mojitos all the way please. Aside from the lovely vaults and the garden when summer comes back around, we can’t deny that 2 for 1 offers throughout the week make this perfecto. Ole!
